sunday morning, we're following the latest developments on the massacre at sandy hook elementary school. president obama will visit with families and first responders in newtown, connecticut today. as well as attend an interfaith vigil where he will speak. federal agents plan to target gun stores and shooting ranges across connecticut in hopes of finding clues about the gunman, adam lanza. it has now been revealed that there is no link between lanza's mother and the school. contrary to earlier reports that said nancy lanza was a teacher at sandy hook elementary. rene marsh continues our coverage. >> this quiet new in town is searching for answers. >> i am also a teacher i could not know how or what she realized. >> her friend, victoria soto died protecting her students. the names and ages of the 20 children were released on saturday. one of

those children is emily. >> my daughter is one of the first that would be giving her support to support. >> as we move on from what happened here, what happened to so many people let it not turn into something that defines us. something that inspires us to be better, more compassionate and more humble. >> the governor of connecticut and turk to speak and echoed the sentiments. >> there will be to discussions about public policy surrounding these events but what is important now is love, courage, compassion. >> president obama will meet with the families who lost loved ones and think the first responders.

".two loving parents." >> participants in last night's vigil say it's important to remember those who were lost. but they also say it is important to open a dialog about solutions. to keep something like this from ever happening again. >> terisa: churches across

the country and here in the bay area are remembering the victims of friday's school shooting. kron four's mike pelton joins us live from st. mary's cathedral in san francisco this morning. >>reporter: good morning. if you can see that this began about 30 minutes ago. many people coming in to pray for the victim's enougand the family let me show you what is a set up this vigil. the monsignor said something a few moments ago and also their goal today is to help everybody cope with the tragedy in connecticut. take a listen. >> to be united for everybody is suffering this loss. >>reporter: the cathedral has a service at nine, 11, one. they expect people to come and pray and if you want to be uplifting and the

sunday service. it is difficult to be uplifting on a day like today. >> thank you, mike. new this morning. an 18-year-old man is dead after being shot in san francisco's bayview district last night. police say the shooting took place on around 10pm. the victim suffered at least one gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital by a friend where he was pronounced dead. the shooting is under investigation. timoth >> there were some tense moments in san francisco's nob hill neighborhood saturday evening. police spent nearly four hours negotiating with a suspect who was holed up in an apartment. this started around 6-30 last night on california street near hyde. >> the neighbor over hood " was possibly a domestic dispute. the neighbor made some of threats that he could possibly have a

weapon. they called the san francisco police department had advised us of this situation. that point our officers advised us they attempted to make contact. they believe that this person could have potentially had a weapon. police believed the suspect had a gun and may have had a hostage. in the end, the suspect police and was taken into custody. >> let's switch gears for a second and take a look at the weather. live look outside at san francisco. robin winston is in with a first look of your forecast. neehim yes. cold, cloudy but dry. the stormtracker 4 showing the dry conditions but we do have more wet weather on the way. make sure to keep your umbrella handy. temperatures outside are cold. not quite as cold yesterday with 20's and 30's. now, we are looking at 40's are run the bay area.

>> police in newport beach have arrested a man who fired about 50 shots in the parking lot of a shopping mall. authorities say marcos gur-rola fired shots into the air and the ground before he was taken into custody. no one was injured, but it did force a lockdown of stores while shoppers stayed inside. the shooting comes just one day after the connecticut school tragedy. and days after the deadly mall shooting in oregon. >> the coast guard is working to clean up an oil spill leaking into a new york city strait. an oil tanker is leaking more than 100-thousand gallons of oil just off of staten island. crew members on the barge noticed the leak, and contacted an oil clean-up company to help in the efforts. waterways remain open as they clean-up the mess. boaters in the area are urged to take caution in the meantime.

>> the parents of a six- year-old student who witnessed friday's massacre describe how their son is doing. the little boy was in the classroom with the shooter. he was able to escape the room and run to safety. the boy's teacher was vicki soto. she died in the classroom protecting her students from the gunfire. the boy's mother recalls the moments before she knew whether her son was okay.

>> when you are standing there waiting and nobody will tell you anything is an indescribable feeling of helplessness. we are very lucky. i think i was there one hour and the people stopped coming and i knew in my heart no other people were coming out of that school. i received a text from a friend that he was at the police station, safe. he was one of the groups of the kids that ran and got out. >> the couple's daughter also attends the school, and is also safe tonight. the newtown school shooting is a complete nightmare, striking parents at their core. even those who didn't lose any children are reeling from the tragedy. kyung lah shows us how people are coping despite so many unanswered questions. >> is so sad how quickly that can be taken away from you in a heartbeat. >> grief has settled in for

not accepted boehner's offer. however, boehner's is still seeking more spending cuts in medicare than president obama had proposed. c-n-n reports president obama has nominated senator john kerry to replace hillary clinton as secretary of state. a formal announcement could come as early as next week. the expected nomination follows u-n ambassador susan rice's decision to withdraw her name from consideration. she dropped out of the running after weeks of criticism from republicans about statements she made on the benghazi attack that killed u-s ambassador chris stevens. >> meanwhile, secretary of state hillary clinton will be spending the next few days at home after sustaining a concussion. the state department says clinton fainted yesterday from dehydration -- while dealing with a stomach virus. when she passed out, she hit her head and suffered a concussion. clinton's doctors have suggested she spend the next week working from home.

>> legal experts say that the bake next issue will be the right to carry a gun public. a federal appeals court in chicago this week overturned a statewide ban on carrying concealed weapons. that ruling is at odds with those of other federal courts that have mostly upheld state and local gun laws restricting their use. legal experts say that competing rulings from appellate courts. mean the fight over this issue is likely headed for supreme court review.

>> we continue to follow the latest massacre as the town of newtown. connecticut holds vigils for the victims of friday's shooting.federal agents plan to target gun stores and shooting ranges across the state in hopes of finding clues about the gunman, adam lanza. we're learning that out of the 26 people killed, 20 of them were between the ages of 6 and 7. its also been revealed that there is no link between lanza's mother and the school. contrary to earlier reports that said nancy lanza was a teacher at sandy hook elementary. also,president obama will attend a vigil this evening in newtown, connecticut to mourn the victims of the sandy hook elementary school massacre. his visit comes two days after a gunman opened fire inside the school, killing 26 people, including 20

obama will visit privately with the victims' families and with emergency personnel who responded to the shootings before speaking at an interfaith vigil at newtown high school. this is obama's fourth trip as president to a community still grieving from a mass shooting. churches across the country and here in the bay area are remembering the victims of friday's school shooting. there are special if the moralmemorials still ahead, kron four's mike pelton joins us live from st. mary's cathedral in san francisco this morning. we're learning more about the victims, in friday's connecticut school massacre. one of the children who did not come home from school is six year old emilie parker. her father - robbie parker - is speaking up. wanting to let others know about the little girl he lost to a

gunman. and he talked about forgiveness. jim let us kee of love for the families and the compassion that we feel for others even complete strangers. keep them with us at all times not just in time of sorrow and a tragedy. like emilie, all of the 20 children were only six or seven years old. for the first time, we are hearing directly from the family of suspected gunman adam lanza. his aunt says adam's mother may have owned guns for self-defense. that they were not a violent family. and that she did live alone. she also talked to reporters about adam. >> i know she had issues with school, she eventually wound up homeschooling him, she battled with the school district, in what capacity i'm not 100% certain, if it was behavior, if it was learning disabilities, i really don't know but he was a very very bright boy,

he was smart. >> police say adam lanza was not known to police prior to the shooting and had no known criminal record. adam's father, peter lanza, weekend. it reads in part. "our family is grieving along with all those who have been affected by this enormous tragedy." he continues to say. "no words can truly express how heartbroken we are" and that relatives are "in a state of disbelief and trying to find whatever answers we can." i >> in the east bay. police and youth groups partnered up today and held a successful gun buyback program. following the aftermath of the connecticut school massacre. hundreds of cars lined up in oakland to trade their guns for cash. kron4's jeff pierce has the details. >> one hundred and twenty one, one hundred and twenty two, one hundred and twenty

three, one hundred and twenty four. >>reporter: olois simmons of youth uprising counted the cars waiting to turn in guns for cash saturday afternoon in oakland. nearly two hundred cars with guns in their trunks waited hours for the hundred dollars for each gun for as many as three guns. it was one of the most succesful gun by back programs ever held in the city. >> one gun off the street is good but the whole back side of a paddy wagon is even better. >>reporter: that success was credited to youth uprising's ability to organize and promote the event beyond what a police department is able to achieve. >> we had young people as the voice of it we did out reach hand to hand in communities with community members reaching out to each other, you get a drastically different outcome then when you have the police reaching out. >>reporter: the oakland police department was more than pleased to process and take possession of those firearms. >> a good amount of firearms here pistols, rifles shotguns. >> this is an example of an assault weapon that was turned in. >>reporter: some waiting in the long line of cars questioned having an event at 82nd and bancroft.

>> undiagnosed? >> we need to look get these, uniquely and understand what is unique about them. we do know that the shooter committed suicide there is a strong link between suicide and depression. it is likely that he was depressed for at least not adequately treated. that is true for most men and boys in this country. they are bless less likely -- to get treatment. >> we need to recognize that these are in pain and they need help and they're not getting the help that they need. our boys are crying out for help. it is not just mental health providers. and we have our own set of issues because we also crew of in the same society where there is a myth. or they cannot get a -- that boy is

to not get depressed. and we start to realize that men and boys are in pain parents the anchor in as prone to young boy sometimes it is actually learned to ignore and suppress. and then the something horribly terrible happens like this. >> you mentioned the socialization how we teach men and boys. a lot is through the media that they consume. movies, television, video games. >> my brother is going to say that something against my statement that i do not like video games. >> they teach employees of
